The Maldives is an archipelago consisting of twenty-six atolls in the Indian ocean, with a territory of 90,000 square kilometers. It features 1.190 coral islands, of which only 200 are inhabited, 100 of which are resorts. With a maximum natural ground level of 2-3 meters above sea level, it is the lowest country on the planet. Some of the islands have really small dimensions and 10 minutes is more than enough time to visit is all. Because of the erosion the islands can easily change their shapes throughout the year.
The climate of the Maldives is warm the whole year, determined by the monsoons in two seasons: the dry season that goes from November until April with very little wind and almost no rain, and rainy season that runs between May and October when strong wind and storms can be expected. Although the humidity is relatively high, the constant sea breezes help to keep the tropical heat mitigated. June is considered to be the wettest month. The average air temperature throughout the year is 28°- 30°C, while the water temperature is constantly 27- 28°C.
